Handmade carpets have gained popularity all over the world and this is due to the fact that they are of high quality, are durable and also have many patterns. A typical handmade oriental rug is made up of several different elements which are warp, weft, overcasting, kilim, fringe and knot. There are basically three kinds of handmade rugs and these are tufted, flat woven and knotted. Within the category of knotted carpets, there are Turkish and Persian Knots. The two main sub-types are give rise to further sub-categories which are discussed here.

Knot refers to a wool strand wrapped around 2 adjacent warp threads, the purpose being to tie the items together. It is this knot that is cut so as to come up with a pile of the carpet. This in turn makes the carpet either pile or flat woven. It takes less amount of time to make a flat weave compared to a pile carpet. Needless to say, it is also less expensive to make a flat carpet. Kilim refers to a common type of the flat woven oriental carpets. The two other common types of flat weaving are Borcade and Soumak.

Back to Turkish and Persian Knot carpets, both of these are further divided into warp strings not only on one but also two levels. They are determined by the knot formation. For Persian Knot, when you hear warp strings on 1 level, it simply means that each knot shows twice. On the other hand, warp strings on 2 levels means that each knot is showing only once. This also applies to Turkish Knots. However, Persian knots that use warp strings are further subcategorized into closed back and open back rugs.

For the open back rugs, it simply means that the full loop section of the knot is found on the higher warp thread. On the other hand, closed back rug gets formed when lower warp thread contains full loop section of the knot. It is only in China that closed back rugs tend to be popular although they are made India, Pakistan, China, and also Iran.

Hand-woven rugs are normally made through tying a larger number of knots, usually in thousands, everyday. But for full-sized oriental rugs, these often take months for them to come into shape.
