Be Uncompromising about your Carpet Pad Preference!
Retailers usually buy rug pads  in truckload quantities because of quantity discounts; as a consequence, they often overlook consumers’ priority of specialized rug pads. Moreover, they fail to offer various types of rug pads so that you may find it difficult to pick out the right rug pad from them. Never be reluctant to compromise with your rug pad preference. Unless you get your preferred rug pad do search for the right one. You may ask your retailer if it can be ordered. If the retailer cannot fulfill your preference do not hesitate to find another retailer to get the right rug pad for your needs.

Carpet Pad Absorbs the Abuse

Many customers assume rug pads are used only to enhance the comfort under foot. Of course, this is one of the reasons of using a rug pad, and there are many other benefits that rug pads offer.  The primary reason for carpet cushion is to absorb the impacts of  wear an dtear to ensure a fair durability. Wear and tear can cause synthetic latex to break down, backings to stretch, separation of the primary backing from the extra backing (delamination) and unnecessary stress on the  fibers of the rug pads. The truth is the best performing carpet cushion, in fact, gives less comfort under foot, but it certainly extends the life of the carpet installation by absorbing the misuse. Often the buyers commit two mistakes: they buy a rug pad that is too soft or too thick; none of these is healthy for your rug.

Carpet Pads Rating

There are various methods of rating carpet cushion performance. Some carpet padding is rated on the basis of density, and  there are different ways of determining the density of rug pads. Indentation load deflection (ILD), indentation force deflection (IFD), compression load deflection (CLD), compression force deflection (CFD) all these terms are often used to describe carpet cushions density.

These terms are  indicate how much weight is required to bottom the carpet cushion out. Some of these methods use a square inch as the area for evaluation, while some other use a broader area such as 6 or 8 square inches. So, when doing the comparison it is important to observe which technique is used. For example, an 8 lb. carpet pad using the broader area of evaluation may be equal to a ½ pound rating for a square inch measure.

Moreover, carpet pads can be rated on the basis of weight per cubic yard. For instance, an 8-pound carpet pad may weigh 8 pounds in a standard 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet cube. Whereas, a flat rubber carpet pad may weigh 22 pounds per cubic foot and a prime urethane carpet cushion may weigh only 4 pounds, but the ultimate performance factor is how many pounds per footfall area will it take for the carpet cushion to bottom out.

Among the two common mistakes of purchasing carpet pads is choosing a too thick pad. A too thicker carpet pad can cause performance problem though it is more comfortable. The carpet industry has established a standard of maximum 7/16  inches thickness, and it is highly suggested that you should not exceed ½ inch because a ½ carpet cushion provides adequate cushioning and still allows the carpet to hold on to the tack strip along the walls simultaneously.

Types of Carpet Padding

There are a wide varieties of carpet pads from waffle rubber pads to the urethane pads. Let’s have a birds eye view of the carpet types. It may sound difficult to choose the right rug pad out of these myriad types. To have more determination for the selection you may find rug pad reviews which is a good way to learn more about rug pad types and their usage.

Waffle Rubber:

Waffle rubber follows the ½ inch recommendation of the thickness of carpet pads. Waffle rubber pads include air in its waffle texture. Nowadays, the waffle rubber pad has become  a good carpet pad, but in the past, it was not this good mostly because of  its filler percentage was very high and the carpet padding tended to break down over time. And when the carpet was to be replaced this carpet cushion reverted back to its original state of Georgia clay. But these problems have been resolved and today’s waffle pads perform much better than the waffle pads of the 1970’s and 80’s.

Urethane Foam:

Urethane foam is available in different densities and thicknesses. Densities of these carpet cushions can be as low as ½ pound per square inch. These could be good options for your rugs and floors; so if you are determined that these are the right pads for your needs never hesitate to pick these rug pads.

Bonded Urethane:

This carpet cushion is also called rebond and is the most popular type of carpet padding sold today. It is made from reclaimed scrap of high-density urethane foam used in furniture and automotive manufacturing, which is bonded together to form carpet cushion. Rebond comes in various thickness and densities. The density is rated as a function of weight in pounds per cubic foot. For example, a 5-lb. rebond cushion would weigh 5lb per cubic foot. The Carpet Cushion Council recommends a cushion of at least 5lbs and 3/8-inch thickness for light traffic areas, and 6.5 lbs. and 3/8 inch for heavy traffic areas. These are minimum guidelines and keep in mind the CCC is the trade voice for the carpet cushion (carpet padding) industry. Many carpet manufacturers recommend a minimum of 8 pounds per cubic foot.

Rebond rug pads or cushions use Butylated hydroxy toluene (Bht) which is a chemical compound commonly known as Bht. It is widely used as an additive in foods, breads and cereals as it has no known side effects for human health. It is added to some urethane carpet pads to lessen the risk of flames when the rug pads are manufactured. However, sadly, this chemical has the tendency to cause yellowing some carpets and floorings. But there are remedies from it. If you have a rebond carpet rug pad, and it causes yellowing you should  rinse the carpet or rug with white vinegar or other mild acid before applying a detergent solution. Remember to be careful about detergent solutions as they are prone to permanently set the yellowing on the rug. But if your rug pad does not contain any bht then it will be exquisite. So get assurance from your retailer that your rug pad does not contain Bht.

Flat Rubber Pads:

For your ultimate luxury you may find the 19 -22lb density flat rubber carpet cushions exquisite. They also offer an enhanced durability. The only setback these cushions have is that they are pricey, and they are a little difficult to find. As a result, the average consumers would not think about this carpet cushion because of its high price. However, one thing is guranteed about these pads: een your 10-year-old olefin Berber will  look as if it was installed last week. Perhaps, flat rubber is the only carpet padding that could outlast your rug and survive a second rug installation.

Fiber Cushions:

Fiber cushioned rug pads make the proper use of scrap fibers. In reality, you may become a bit disappointed with the performance of these fiber cushions. In comparison with other fiber cushions, made from jute or hair mixed jute, perform better and normally experts of home decor recommend the above-mentioned pads rather than fiber cushions.
